Harry Redknapp has admitted that he has no idea whether Premier League relegation would condemn Queens Park Rangers to the same fate as Portsmouth.
Rangers’ financial results made for 2011-12 made for grim reading this week
and their spending spree since then is unlikely to improve the outlook for
the current season.
Although partly bankrolled by the family of multi-billionaire steel magnate
Lakshmi Mittal, there are fears relegation could have a catastrophic effect
on the club’s accounts.
Redknapp, who watched Portsmouth plunge into an administration that still
haunts them to this day after he quit the club in 2008, said: “I don’t know
the situation of the owners any more than I knew the situation of the owner
at Portsmouth, who was a young Russian guy who was a friend of Roman
Abramovich.
“When they buy the football club, you don’t know whether he is richer than
Abramovich, so when they want to spend money on the team, what do you do?
“You don’t say: “I’m sorry you can’t spend that money because I don’t know if
you’ve got it or not.’ ” It cost QPR more than £20 million to sign Loic Remy
and Christopher Samba in January and Redknapp, who only took charge in
November, insisted he would be willing to offload the pair if the club
failed to beat the drop.
He said: “There will always be buyers for good players. Selling bad players —
overpaid bad players — is the difficulty.”
QPR go into the game with Sunderland today four points adrift of safety at the foot of the table on 20 points.
Redknapp targeted 37 for survival and was confident of achieving it after last weekend’s vital win at Southampton.
“It’s like when the summer comes and you see all the girls walking about in miniskirts. When the sun’s out, all the girls look fantastic. That’s how you feel when you’ve had a win.”
