Jack Wilshere

Having experienced a sensational first-team breakthrough in 2010/11, last season proved to be a major disappointment for Jack as injury ruled him out of the entire campaign. Not only that, but his dreams of competing for England at Euro 2012 were dashed too. It was a major blow for the midfielder following such a thrilling debut season, but Jack’s long-awaited return will be a major boost for Arsene Wenger this term.
Seen as arguably the most exciting young English midfielder of his generation, Jack has been with the Club since the age of nine and was a key member of the 2009 FA Youth Cup-winning side. Since then his rate of progression has been nothing short of exceptional, and when he stepped up into the first team he immediately caught the eye with a string of fine displays.

August

Jack continued his recovery from an ankle injury. "We still have to assess them [him and Bacary Sagna] again after the international break," said Arsene Wenger. "After that they should not be too far away from normal training."

September

Jack did not feature in September.

October

Jack finally made his return to the first team, making his first Premier League start for 524 days in the win over QPR. The 20-year-old made an immediate impact, producing a typically combative performance that saw him crowned Man of the Match. “It felt amazing to be back,” Wilshere said. “All the hard work and long days at the training ground have paid off.

November

Jack started the month by being sent off at Old Trafford. Things improved from there though, and he scored his first goal since returning from injury in the 2-0 win over Montpellier. “I’m very happy because Jack lost more than a year with injury,” team-mate Laurent Koscielny said after Wilshere’s goal against the French side. He’s a very good player. He’s young and has a long career in front of him. He played well for the team and it’s good he scored.”

December

Jack made six appearances in December and was named man of the Match against both West Brom and Bradford. The young midfielder committed his long-term future to the Club after signing a new deal, to the delight of Arsene Wenger, who said: “Jack is certainly the best known, the leader of this group [of young British players]. We’re very happy that we could conclude their new deals at the same time.”

January

Jack continued to impress in the opening month of 2013, playing a part in all eight of Arsenal’s games and scoring the winner against Swansea in the FA Cup. His all-action performance against the Swans saw him named man of the match, while he was also voted Arsenal’s best player against Manchester City. Meanwhile, Jack was given the captain’s armband when regular skipper Thomas Vermaelen went off injured against West Ham United. “[Wilshere] is naturally a guy who is not scared of anything on the football pitch and that is usually the sign of a leader,” Arsene Wenger said. “He wants to win and shows you that. “Of course he will be one of the leaders of this club - in fact he already is. A leader is somebody who does everything on the pitch to help his team to win. And he does that.”

February

Jack started all but one of Arsenal’s games in February, also coming on as a second-half substitute against Blackburn Rovers. The 21-year-old continued to impress with a series of dynamic displays, and was named man of the match for his performance in the game against Bayern Munich. “He adds that little bit more that we need in many of our games,” said Santi Cazorla. “His return from injury was a great plus for the Club and we all hope he can maintain the level he’s at because he’s very good."

March

Jack played the entirety of the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur before picking up an injury that ruled him out of the month’s remaining games.
