Arsenal will look to sign Carlos Vela for £3.5m even though the Real Sociedad striker reportedly doesn't want to re-join the club.
The Daily Mail claims Arsenal will push ahead with the signing of Vela, even though Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay recently claimed that the Mexican does not want to join the Gunners.
As part of the agreement that sent Vela to Sociedad two years ago Arsenal included a £3.5m buy-back clause. And following his excellent form in La Liga last season, Arsene Wenger wants to trigger the option and bring Vela back to the Emirates Stadium.
Because even if Vela does not want to play for Arsenal, Wenger can sell him on to another club for more than £3.5m and Arsenal will pocket the profit.
The report claims talks between Arsenal and Sociedad are at an advanced stage, and it looks all but certain that Vela will be an Arsenal player next season - but potentially not for very long.
He scored 16 times in 34 appearances for Real Sociedad last season, and was a key player alongside Antoine Griezmann as Sociedad finished the campaign in seventh position in La Liga.
It's a no brainer for Arsenal really - this is exactly the sort of situation they would have been hoping for when they inserted that buy-back clause in his Real Sociedad contract.
Excellent forward planning from the Arsenal hierarchy, and they should be congratulated for that because they find themselves in a no-lose situation.
A fit and fully motivated Carlos Vela will be a useful squad player for Wenger. He's not the striker they desperately need to compete with Olivier Giroud for a central berth, but he can play in either of the wide forward positions in Wenger's formation.
If he's not interested in wearing the Arsenal shirt again, then the Gunners can pop him on the transfer list and wait for the bids to roll in. One thing's for sure - they'll get a lot more than £3.5m for him.
